I’m Ellie, an aspiring potter based in Tokyo. I began making pottery in 2022, when I signed up for classes twice a month at a local pottery studio. Then, at the start of 2024, my sensei gave me the opportunity to become her apprentice and work part-time at the studio, which I have been doing ever since.

The very first task of my apprenticeship was to make 1,000 yunomi (cups). This probably took me much longer than it should have, but I appreciated the repetition and eventually found my rhythm. This exercise helped me develop muscle memory that comes into play with everything I’ve made since.

I enjoy making functional pieces for everyday use, with the intention of bringing a touch of beauty and human connection to our everyday lives. I’m drawn to the unpredictable nature of working with clay, and the way the marks and imperfections of the making process can contribute to the beauty of each piece.
