sento 🫧

I’ve been living in Japan for the past 5 years and in that time I’ve fallen in love with Japanese bathing culture. Visiting a sento (public bathhouse) or onsen (natural hot spring) is one of my top recommendations for anyone traveling to Japan.

Multiple generations regularly visit public bathhouses to relax, socialize and take care of themselves and others. These public spaces are a seemingly impossible combination of community and anonymity.

This print shows part of the female bathroom, with women showering before entering the shared baths. It is a hand carved and hand pressed linocut print with watercolor paint details on handmade Japanese washi paper.

This print is inspired by my local neighborhood sento; Hotta-yu in Nishiarai, Tokyo.

All prints are numbered and signed.
